Quick hits updates from the world of African pro wrestling

  • World Association of Wrestling, South Africa (the former Champions Pro Wrestling) will be holding their marquee event of the year, WrestleMonster VI, on Saturday March 30th, 2024 at the Splash Festival in Nelson Mandela Bay. This year’s WrestleMonster will heavily feature British wrestlers from the World Association of Wrestling, the UK based promotion run by the famous Knight family. Sweet Saraya Knight, Ricky Knight and PJ Knight will all head to South Africa to compete. Past WrestleMonster events have drawn big crowds and tens of thousands of people visit the Splash Festival each year.

  • There’s a new champion of the capital city of the Republic of the Congo. Robot Vipere has become the new FECOLUSAF Departmental Champion of Brazzaville after coming out on top at the Departmental Championship event in TalangaÏ, Brazzaville that took place the first weekend of March 2024. Robot Vipere came out on top following the championship final after reigning Brazzaville champion, RTGA Du Pouvoir Lion, was forced to relinquish the title, as is the usual scenario heading into the departmental championship, but RTGA was not given a chance to reclaim the title and continue his reign due to his status as Champion of the Congo. Robot Vipere last reigned as FECOLUSAF Champion of Brazzaville in 2019 before being defeated by his student RTGA in a title match.

  • The city of Mbuji-Mayi in the Democratic Republic of the Congo hosted a multi week stadium show, the first edition of the Challenge Congo, at Kashala Bonzala Stadium featuring some of the best wrestlers in the region. The Challenge ran over the previous few weekends, with matches starting the weekend of March 8th and the final day of action taking place on Sunday, March 24th, 2024. The event had some international flair with Zombie De Kibambi of Angola taking place in the matches. Also in action were top stars Ciu Ciu Sida, Anguluma, Antilope Kabamba, Postolo Lola and Jibick Mua Kajinga (also spelled as Jubic Mwakajinga 4x4) among others. The event final featured Jibick Mua Kajinga and Postolo Lola ending in a no contest draw after the match devolved into an exchange of mysticism and catch fetiche with each wrestler holding an animal corpse in their arms. Catching stadium shows in the Congo is always cool, so if you’d like to seek out some of the matches, the YouTube channels Mardoche International TV and Congo Canal 26 are great places to start. But just a warning, the championship final is graphic and not for animal lovers.

  • Congolese wrestling legend City Train passed away on March 25th, 2024. City Train was a popular heavyweight in the early decades of the 2000’s and held title belts throughout his career. Unfortunately, many details regarding City Train’s career are not readily available at this time but I will work to learn more about his career for future projects.

  • Nigeria Pro Wrestling Federation has announced plans for an event that is planned to take place over a two day period on April 5th and 6th, 2024.
